Ugh, These 5 Fall Trends Are So Overdone. Here’s How To Mix It Up

On the first semi-brisk day after a sweltering summer, we bust out our sweaters, don a vampy lip color and wait 20 minutes for a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. Same old same old.

Why not try something new this autumn?

Here are five things everyone is doing this season, and five ways you can stand out.

1. Ditch the PSL (Pumpkin Spice = Life)

These warm, cozy lattes comfort us, empty our wallets and add to our waistlines. Bet you didn’t see that coming.

At 300 calories and about $4 each, just a few PSLs a week can be dangerous. Why not save that money (forget about those calories) and spend it on awesome holiday gifts for your friends and family? Trade five lattes for one nice sweater from Forever XXI. It’s that simple!

2. Trade in your floppy hat

Floppy felt hats keep us warm and stylish, but they don’t do much for charity. Get yourself a cute, comfy beanie from Love Your Melon instead and help end pediatric cancer.

3. Avoid The “Kylie” Pout

Rich, brown lips scream “fall in the 90s,” but have you tried metallic lipsticks? Inspired by the same grungy era, these lippies will help you stand out from the crowd. They’re also less drying, making them perfect for cold autumn days.

Try these from Too Faced and Lime Crime.

4. Turn off the Netflix

Cold, rainy days beg us to stay in bed and binge-watch our favorite Netflix originals. But, when was the last time you picked up a book that wasn’t a required text?

Cozy up with a classic, or whatever sounds interesting to you. A good book will be a lot more stimulating than How I Met Your Mother for the fourth time.

5. Blow out the scented candles

Who doesn’t want their space to smell like a fresh-baked apple pie? It can be tempting to stock up on Bath and Body Works candles and light them every day, but some studies suggest this isn’t the healthiest habit. Chemicals in fragrant candles can cause health issues.

Instead, buy soy or fragrance-free candles. They’re better for you, and some are even cheaper than your favorite 3-wicks from the mall.
