Women’s voices in the media have always been underrepresented. Even when it comes to who’s creating the magazine ads, commercials and plot lines in TV shows we watch – men tend to run the show. Perhaps it’s the reason media has often been unkind to women, underrepresented them in body type and race, and has narrowly defined the types of roles women should play and topics they should care about.

Which is why YouTube, and YouTubers themselves have never been more important. Women are calling the shots because they’re creating the type of content they want to see without having to go through anyone else. The platform has allowed women to be themselves, and/or play the parts they want to watch. Funny women. Loud women. Awkward women. Talking about topics openly and honestly in a way that the mainstream media can’t and doesn’t allow.

Here are five women on YouTube who are killing the game and producing more of the type of content women need and want to consume.
