For as long as she can remember, Alexis King has always had a camera glued to her hand. After careful thought and weighing out the pros and cons, Alexis decided to put a pause on school to follow her dream of becoming a full time photographer. Alexis is a vibrant and extremely talented young woman who is a major inspiration to us here at the Lala. We were lucky enough to sit down with her, ask some questions, and find out how she got started.
the Lala : At what age did you first start to develop your passion for photography?
Alexis King : I’ve always been obsessed with looking through old family photos and taking pictures on my own for as long as I can remember. But, I started to really develop a passion about a year and a half ago, when I bought my first professional camera and booked my first session!
the Lala : Did you ever take any photography classes? How did you learn what you know about photography?
AK : I have never taken any photography classes because everything that you need to know is online. I have reached out to a couple of my favorite successful photographers, who have also never taken photography classes, so I felt reassured that classes or a degree aren’t a must in this industry. However, I do rely heavily on the web since everything you need to know as a photographer is there. Besides, it’s all about having “an eye” in this business.
the Lala : When did you realize you wanted to make a career out of it?
AK : After months of constant debating, I finally decided to drop out of my Physical Therapist Assistant Program to pursue this passion of mine because it makes me the happiest. During the process of deciding what I wanted to do, my first thought about dropping out was negative. I felt that maybe I was a quitter or even a failure, and the last thing I wanted to do was disappoint my family. But then, I decided to look at the big picture and I realized that there were going to be positives to my decision. I thought to myself, what is more important than my own happiness? If God gave me this gift and I am lucky enough to live my life doing what I love, then there is a purpose to my decision. I am able to capture beautiful life moments in other people’s lives and help them relive the moments through pictures by bringing back those feelings of happiness and love! Photography is what I love to do and I am so excited and blessed to be able to make a living doing what I am passionate about.
the Lala : What shoots do you enjoy the most?
AK : I really found myself falling in love with engagement and wedding photography. I love connecting with my clients and capturing the raw emotion that comes from two people who are in love. I also love working with seniors graduating high school, it’s a very exciting time in their life and I love bringing out that excitement.
the Lala : Who or what are your inspirations?
AK : PINTEREST PINTEREST PINTEREST! I get so infatuated with some of the work I find on there and love discovering successful photographers that I can look up too and get inspired by.
the Lala : What are your future plans with your photography business?
AK : I am currently fixing up a studio which is a very exciting time in my life. I am so excited to decorate this studio just as I envision and make my dream a reality. In the future, my dream is to become a traveling destination engagement/wedding photographer, and until then, I will continue to work towards that goal.
