The 58th Grammy Award nominees were announced on Monday, and with this announcement comes a lot to talk about. So let’s get into it.
Who’s Leading the Nominations?
Kendrick Lamar was nominated 11 times for his work from his third album To Pimp a Butterfly, as well as his work with Kanye West, Flying Lotus and Taylor Swift (who follows Kendrick Lamar with seven nominations).
Who Surprised Us?
After putting out EPs since 2011, Courtney Barnett, the 28-year-old Australian singer-songwriter, is getting recognition for her first full-length album. And this recognition not only includes feature stories in Rolling Stone and the New York Times, but also a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist.
The Women are Rocking It
The Grammy’s removed the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance categories after the 46th award ceremony, substituting them with a gender neutral Best Rock Performance category. Since then, we can count on one hand the number of females who have been nominated for the award. Last year no women were nominated for the award at all, but this year the tables have turned. For the first time in the history of the Best Rock Performance category, it is dominated by women. The category’s nominees include the Alabama Shakes, led by Brittany Howard, Florence + The Machine, Elle King, Wolf Alice, fronted by Ellie Rowsell, and the only all-male group, the Foo Fighters.
The Queen of Modern Rap Continues Her Reign
The only female rap artist nominated this year is none other than Nicki Minaj. She’s nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Only,” Best Rap Performance for “Truffle Butter,” and The Pinkprint is up for Best Rap Album. Nicki Minaj has been nominated for seven Grammy’s prior to the 58th Grammy Awards but never won. Will this be her year?
Nominated for… What?
Two beloved women are nominated for, not their music or comedy, but for their personal writing. The Best Spoken Word Album nomination includes audio books, which explains how Amy Poehler’s first book, Yes Please, is among the listed nominees. Additionally, the liner notes in Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced has given Joni Mitchell a chance at a Grammy this year as she’s nominated for Best Album Notes.
We still have a few months to find out if the Alabama Shakes, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Stapleton, Taylor Swift or The Weeknd will take home the Album of the Year Grammy award, but in the meantime, check out the Grammy’s full list of nominees and start planning your viewing party. The 58th Grammy Awards ceremony will take place on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
