I Dressed Like Kylie Jenner For A Week: Here’s What Happened

By  |  0 Comments

When you decide to channel your inner-Kylie Jenner in the name of journalism, you’re forced to face a harsh reality. You see, Kylie Jenner is a celebrity with a whopping 30 million Instagram followers. She lives in glamorous Calabasas, California, she has a rapper boyfriend, and she also travels the world. Not to mention she’s also Kim Kardashian’s little sister.

Then there’s me, with a modest 1,600 Instagram followers, living in Amish Town, USA (seriously I am not exaggerating… there are Amish houses on the same road I grew up on, and I dodge the Amish in their horse-drawn buggies on the road daily). But even after coming to this realization, I chose to remain optimistic and started to think of this fun little article as more of a challenge — a #KylieJennerChallenge*, if you will.

*not to be confused with the #KylieJennerLipChallenge.

Prep Day:

If I was going to dress like Kylie Jenner for a whole week, I knew I’d have to prep myself from head to toe. To start, I had to make sure that my baby hairs were on point, and that my eyebrows and lashes were on fleek. Since I am not made of money, I opted for $3 drugstore lashes rather than Kylie’s $200 mink lash extensions.

Now for the infamous lips… Is this the part of the article where I am supposed to tell you that I did the #KylieJennerLipChallenge using a shot glass? Well, sorry to disappoint, but I chose a variety of lip plumpers instead, for obvious reasons.

The last step in channeling my inner Kylie Jenner was to get long acrylic nails. Naturally, I copied some of her instapics along the way. Let the week begin!

Day One:

For my first day, I decided to jump right into it. I left my house wearing an all denim outfit similar to Kylie’s. While I did really like the outfit, I knew I’d get some funny looks from strangers throughout the day. When I got to Dunkin Donuts around 11 a.m. for my morning coffee, I opted for the drive-thru. I know, I know, my first chance to publicly slay as Kylie Jenner and I chickened out. Sorry, Ky. But while driving to my next destination, I started to get more into character. Call it coffee-induced confidence, but now I was ready to be seen. With coffee in hand, I took on my mission: TJ Maxx. To my surprise, my new makeover had gone relatively unnoticed… hello, I am dressed like Kylie Jenner! Selfie anyone?

Day Two:

I had to do some grocery shopping for my mom so I left my house with a much more subtle Kylie Jenner look. The white jeans and crop top were much more in my comfort zone, and I didn’t get any of the funny looks or whispers that I would have, had I went with an edgier option.

Day Three:

Outfit number 3 I was not excited about, simply because of the thigh-high boots. Don’t get me wrong, I’d totally rock a pair of thigh highs in NYC or LA, but not so much in my little hometown. So, since I do not own a pair, I improvised and paired tall socks with black booties and BAM instant thigh highs. After my mini photo shoot in my Kylie apparel, I met a friend for coffee. She looked at me funny and greeted me with “interesting outfit choice” instead of “hello.” Once I explained why I was wearing makeshift thigh high boots to Starbucks, she was fully supportive, but it made me wonder what everyone else who saw me was thinking…

Day Four:

The next night I had plans to go out with friends, so I pulled out the little black H&M dress I bought especially for this article. Although the dress isn’t Alexander McQueen like Kylie’s, I like to think it was a pretty good replica. I thought this was my best Kylie look, so I was a little disappointed when no one asked me for a selfie *insert sad face emoji here*.

Day Five:

The 5th outfit was by far my favorite look. Mostly because it was my sense of style so I was comfortable in it. Since I wore this outfit to the bar on a weeknight, I was the only girl wearing heels. However, I got a lot of compliments on my outfit, so I didn’t mind looking out of place.

Day Six:

MY LAST LOOK! I brought back the faux thigh highs for this outfit because they are Kylie Jenner-esque and deep down I kind of enjoyed them. Don’t let this laidback look fool you, though, it was quite uncomfortable. I went out to eat with my family in this outfit and I kept getting overheated at the restaurant. It probably had something to do with the fact that I was wearing a bomber jacket and knee socks in 80 degrees. Also, the thigh highs drew unwanted attention from fellow patrons at the restaurant. Apparently they don’t follow Kylie Jenner on the ‘gram.

Amazingly enough, dressing like Kylie Jenner actually boosted my confidence. I admire her unique style, and we need to give Kylie some credit — she totally rocks edgy outfits and creates trends. Although most of the time her outfit choices are a little too daring for my comfort zone, I will definitely start making more fashion risks inspired by Kylie Jenner in the future.

After all, she hasn’t been coined King Kylie for nothing.
